Spinal Decompression Maintenance Care

Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in downtown San Francisco for over 10 years now.

Over the past 10 years or so we have helped thousands of herniated cervical and lumbar disc patients return to more active lifestyles with the DRX9000. Many have been able to avoid back or neck surgery as well.

Sure, there are always some that do not respond favorably to decompression therapy but they are the minority. What typically happens is that patients end up a lot better than they were and are glad they did the treatment. Some have a complete resolution of symptoms.

As we near the end of the spinal decompression protocol, which is typically around 20 sessions performed over a 6-8 week period, we discuss with the patient the option of continuing on with some sort of ongoing maintenance plan. About 50% choose to do so.

Is DRX9000 spinal decompression maintenance necessary? In some cases YES, in other cases we just don’t know. When we just don’t know, we recommend that our patients listen to their body and call for a decompression session “as needed”. This seems to work very well.

Some patients never need the decompression machine again and choose to keep their spine healthy with chiropractic, exercise, stretching, Yoga or Pilates.

So, if we feel you need cervical or lumbar spinal decompression maintenance care, we will tell you. If not, we will teach you how to take care of your new back or neck so that the results last.

The conditions that respond best to cervical or lumbar spinal decompression therapy are bulging or herniated disc in the neck or low back. Degenerative disc disease, Spinal Stenosis, Facet Syndrome, and Failed Back Surgery cases also respond well.

Not all patients can qualify medically for decompression therapy. The best thing to do is research online, find a spinal decompression doctor near you with lots of experience (this matters most) and make an appointment to find out if you are a good candidate.

If you live or work near the San Francisco Financial District, or have the ability to stay for a month or two, you can see us.

Spinal Decompression Maintenance Care

Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression in San Francisco for around 10 years now. The machine we use is the DRX9000. Prior to this, patients that did not respond favorably to chiropractic care were referred for surgical consultation.

Over the past 10 years we have helped thousands of herniated disc patients return to more normal lives and prevent back surgery.

About half of our spinal decompression patients continue on with maintenance care. They do this because they are happy with the results and wish to maintain them. The frequency of maintenance care varies from once every 3 months to around once per month in advanced cases.

Your spinal decompression doctor will usually have a good idea of what you need from how you respond to the initial intensive care, which is 20 visits over a 6 week period.

As far as what to expect from decompression therapy…some report a complete resolution of their low back pain or sciatica. A small minority report no change at all. And everyone else reports they are much better than they were and glad they did the treatment.

Sure, some patients do not respond to decompression…it’s just the way it is. But you know what? They are still whole and can pursue other treatment options.

If you have surgery you may be disqualified from decompression…so why not try spinal decompression first?

Is Maintenance Chiropractic for Chronic Low Back Pain Effective?

back pain treatment in san francisco
Back Pain

When people think of chiropractic, they immediately think of low back pain and are often surprised to find out that chiropractic can benefit many conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, rotator cuff tears, as well as hip, knee, and ankle conditions.  There is also research support for manipulation (a key component of chiropractic) and its role in managing “somatovisceral” related conditions such as pneumonia, dizziness, stage 1 hypertension, PMS, asthma, colic, and bed wetting.

Research clearly shows that chiropractic manipulation out performs other forms of treatment for acute, subacute and chronic low back pain. But, the question remains, can “maintenance chiropractic” PREVENT problems down the road? Ironically, two medical doctors in August of 2011 published an article in a leading medical journal (SPINE) entitled, “Does maintained spinal manipulation therapy for chronic nonspecific low back pain result in better long-term outcome?” The study’s objective was to determine if treating chronic low back pain patients (pain >6 months) after a course of 12 treatments in the first month would do better, the same or worse if treatments were continued at 2-week intervals for an additional 9 months. They compared 3 groups of patients: 1.) 12 treatments of “sham” (placebo) manipulation over a 1-month period. 2.) 12 treatment of “real” spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) for 1 month but no treatments for the subsequent 9 months. 3.) The same as #2 but with treatments every 2 weeks over the next 9 months. To determine the differences between these 3 groups, the authors measured pain and disability scores (using questionnaires), generic health status (questionnaire), and back-specific patient satisfaction (questionnaire) at 1, 4, 7 and 10-month intervals.

The results showed that groups 2 (SMT for 1 month only) and 3 (SMT for 1 month + every 2 weeks for 9 months) had significantly lower pain and disability scores than the 1st group (sham/placebo group) at the end of the 1st month or, 12 visits. However, only group 3 (treatments were continued for 9 months at 2 week intervals) showed more improvement in pain and disability scores at 10 months. Equally important, the scores for the non-maintained group 2 patients returned to near their pre-treatment levels by month 10!

The authors concluded that not only is spinal manipulative therapy effective for chronic low back pain, but more importantly, REGULAR ADJUSTMENTS EVERY 2 WEEKS after the initial course of concentrated care (3x/week for 4 weeks) was needed, “…to obtain long-term benefit,” suggesting that, “…maintenance SM after the initial intensive manipulative therapy,” is appropriate care to obtain long-term results.

This study FINALLY supports the recommendations made by chiropractors for many years –regular adjustments are beneficial to obtain a higher quality of life, less pain and less disability!

We realize you have a choice in who you choose to provide your healthcare services.  If you, a friend or family member requires care for low back pain, we sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence shown by choosing our services and look forward in serving you and your family presently and, in the future.

Is Spinal Decompression Ongoing?

Spinal Decompression is now considered by many to be the “Gold Standard” for the nonsurgical treatment of herniated and bulging discs associated with chronic back pain and sciatica.

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

At our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center we have helped thousands of herniated disc patients return to more normal lives. About 70% of them decide to continue on with some sort of maintenance program to maintain the positive changes obtained with the normal treatment protocol.

WHY…is this necessary to maintain the changes…will the results undo themselves without ongoing spinal decompression sessions?

Well…this is a great question…and the simple answer is that these patients are so happy with the spinal decompression results that they don’t want to take any chances.

What we are talking about are decompression maintenance visits of anywhere from once per month to once every 3 months. Some patients just monitor their back or neck pain themselves and come in for a session or two when they think they need it.

Spinal decompression is a tool. It helps thousands of herniated discs patients return to more normal lives every month worldwide. There are also thousands of back and neck surgeries that are prevented each year because of nonsurgical spinal decompression on machines like the DRX9000.

If coming in for periodic spinal decompression sessions will allow these patients to maintain the positive changes achieved it’s a small price to pay.

So…is spinal decompression ongoing?

For some, YES!

The choice is YOURS 🙂
