When to Consider Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression

Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing natural solutions for low back pain and sciatica in San Francisco for over 20 years now.  About 8 years ago we began to incorporate nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 into our treatment protocols. The results have been outstanding.

Prior to spinal decompression we would have to refer out patients that did not respond to our treatment, which consisted of chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release, deep tissue laser, acupuncture, custom exercises, yoga, and traction. We also consulted our chronic back pain patients on plant based nutrition and meditation.

It sounds like a lot…but sometimes it just was not enough and we would need to refer out for surgical consultation and possible back surgery.

But that was pre-spinal decompression. We still have all the tools at our disposal that we used to have, but we also have the DRX9000 spinal decompression system.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated and bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and facet syndrome, without drugs or surgery.

The machine is able to isolate of a specific spinal disc, say L5-S1 (the most commonly treated) and initiate healing. Spinal decompression seeks to enlarge the disc space, elongate the spine, stretch and strengthen the spinal muscles and ligaments, rehydrate the injured disc, and re-position the herniated disc fragments back where they belong and off the spinal cord and nerves. It sounds like a lot, but that’s how it works.

Does it work every time? NO…nothing does…just most of the time.

Even in the unlikely event  nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 fails to deliver you are still left whole and can explore other treatment options. If you have spinal surgery and pieces of disc are cut away or the spine is fused, you are not left whole and may be disqualified from ever trying decompression therapy. This is why we recommend trying the DRX9000 first.

You should consider spinal decompression therapy if you have low back pain, sciatica, leg weakness, chronic back pain, hip pain, and have been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc (or other conditions listed above) that are not responding to conventional back pain treatments.

Sure, cortisone injections may make you feel better temporarily…but the long term effects can be deadly with repeated use. Spinal decompression addresses the cause and does it naturally. Those in the know, including medical doctors, physical therapist, and professional athletes are using spinal decompression as a tool to avoid surgery and stay healthy…and you can too.

Spinal Decompression for Sciatica

drx9000 therapy san francisco, 94111
DRX9000 Lumbar Decompression

We have been providing treatment for Sciatica in San Francisco for over 20 years now. The primary causes of sciatica are bulging and herniated lumbar discs. During this time we have mostly used chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, massage, deep tissue laser, and custom exercises.

About 8 years ago we began to incorporate spinal decompression therapy with the DRX9000. The DRX9000 is a machine that is designed and built to provide nonsurgical relief from neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated and bulging lumbar discs, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, and spinal stenosis.

The results have been outstanding.

We also provide cervical decompression therapy with the DRX9000c.

Often times, sciatica patients will not respond to chiropractic care, physical therapy, cortisone, or pain medication. The sciatica symptoms resulting from the herniated discs can cause severe back pain and disability. Some patient are almost to sore and sensitive to even touch.

This is when spinal decompression makes the most amount of sense. Patients can be too sore to have chiropractic or physical therapy but they can handle decompression therapy. Typically, after  several sessions the inflammation starts to subside and the sciatica symptoms begin to abate….which is very nice.

Spinal decompression therapy with the DRX9000 takes about an hour for each session. The average sciatica patient requires about 2o sessions to achieve a favorable outcome.

We incorporate muscle stimulation, ice, exercise, and some chiropractic if indicated and tolerated. We will even apply deep tissue laser and advanced soft tissue methods such as ART and Graston as needed. The treatment is very comprehensive.

Not everyone qualifies for spinal decompression. If you have advanced spinal degeneration or osteoporosis, a previous spinal fusion, severe scoliosis, aortic aneurism, multiple sclerosis, to name a few, you may not qualify.

If you are interested in finding out if you are a candidate for nonsurgical spinal decompression at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center, please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Considering Spinal Decompression?

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for over 20 years now. For the past 8 years we have included nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 into the mix.

Prior to spinal decompression therapy we would be unable to help certain herniated disc patients. After-all…chiropractic, which is a wonderful form of treatment for most cases, just can’t help certain disc patients. My guess is that up to 20% of the patients that suffer with a herniated or bulging cervical or lumbar disc, simply will not respond to chiropractic care, physical therapy, medications, acupuncture, or exercise. They need something more.

Before spinal decompression we would refer most of these patients for back or neck surgery consultations. Some would have surgery, but most would just live with the pain. These are the first patients we treated when we purchased our first DRX9000 8 years ago.

Now things are different. The DRX9000 becomes our “next step” if chiropractic fails to deliver results with herniated and bulging disc patients. We also have a DRX9000c to treat cervical disc herniations.

Sometimes the DRX9000 or DRX9000c can actually help make chiropractic adjustments work. The spinal decompression process is able to reduce inflammation, pain, and muscle spasms , which allow a patient to tolerate chiropractic. And the combination of chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression can be much more powerful than either one alone.

Don’t get me wrong…spinal decompression IS NOT a magic wand. What it is is the most advanced form of nonsurgical treatment in the marketplace today for neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated discs, bulging discs, facet syndrome, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease.

Does spinal decompression therapy with the DRX9000 work every time?

NO…nothing does.  Just most of the time.

But here’s the deal. Spinal decompression is very safe. If it does not help you are still whole and can explore other treatment options. If you have fusion surgery you cannot UN-do it. You will be forever disqualified from ever trying spinal decompression.

TIP: Try spinal decompression first…you can always have surgery!

Can cervical decompression help prevent neck surgery?

drx9000c san francisco
DRX9000c Cervical Decompression

We have been treating neck pain in San Francisco for over 20 years now. About 7 years ago we began to include nonsurgical cervical decompression into our treatment protocols. The machine we use is the DRX9000c.

As chiropractors, when it comes to treating neck and back pain, we are always looking to achieve a favorable outcome with our hands…and for the most part this is what happens. However, there are times when “hands-on” does not work…or it doesn’t work good enough…or the patient is so sore and inflamed you can’t even lay your hands on them…what now…NECK SURGERY?

Well…that was our thought process 7 years ago. Now things are different…different because we have a next step…cervical decompression with the DRX9000c.

So cervical decompression can help prevent neck surgery?

YES!

I have actually had patients (many of them) that were scheduled for neck surgery, that decided to put it off and try spinal decompression first. Why?…to avoid neck surgery if possible. Did it work? YES…more often than not.

Here’s the deal…the DRX9000c is NOT a Magic Bullet. What it is is the most advanced medical technology available (that I know of)  for the nonsurgical treatment of neurovascular compression syndromes in the neck. Conditions such as herniated and bulging cervical discs, spinal stenosis, facet syndrome, and degenerative disc disease.

But it doesn’t work every time…just most of the time…and if you ask me…that’s a good enough reason to try it…as long as you qualify medically…not everyone does.

So yes…cervical decompression can help prevent neck surgery…absolutely…that’s one of our primary goals…and it’s why herniated and bulging disc patients seek us out.

Listen…you can always have neck surgery. But if you have any kind of cervical fusion surgery you will never be able to try nonsurgical cervical decompression…and that is a bummer.

I have had patients cry in my office when I told them this. I have had herniated disc patients with neck fusion say they would have the screws removed and come back. They were stuck and living out a nightmare. heck…at least try spinal decompression first (if you qualify).

It’s what I would do…and it’s also what I would have a loved one do. In fact…a close family member went through spinal decompression at my clinic and still had to have low back surgery…it was that bad. But at least she knows she tried.

When to consider spinal decompression

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

About 80% of the general population will experience a serious bout of low back pain at some point in their lives.  A certain percentage of these people will develop chronic low back pain…which is back pain that persists for over 90 days. In fact…the #1 predisposing factor for chronic back pain is previous back pain.

Of the patients that develop chronic low back pain, a certain percentage will become severe and debilitating, mostly due to conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease.

There are many treatment options for severe chronic low back pain. As far as conservative treatment, there is chiropractic, physical therapy, exercise, and acupuncture.

The medical approach is typically pain pills, muscle relaxers, cortisone, and surgery.

Some back pain clinics combine both medical care and conservative care.

Recently…about 7-8 years ago, a new nonsurgical treatment option for low back pain came to the marketplace.  It’s called nonsurgical spinal decompression, and is performed with a machine that costs about $100,000 (the best ones). The machine we use at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center is the DRX9000…the Rolls Royce of spinal decompression systems.

Spinal decompression machines are able to isolate on a specific spinal disc,  say L5/S1 and promote healing. It does this by enlarging the disc space, re-positioning the disc, elongating the spinal ligaments, stretching the spinal muscles, and re-hydrating the injured disc. Results are outstanding.

You should consider spinal decompression either at the point you have been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc, or after more conservative and less expensive treatments such as chiropractic and exercise have failed. Certainly before you have surgery. Because if you have fusion surgery you can never try spinal decompression…you are permanently disqualified.

Now, chiropractors like myself have a “next step” if chiropractic fails to deliver. Before spinal decompression we would have to refer out for surgical options. Times have changed.

So if you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc, bulging disc, spinal stenosis, facet syndrome, or disc degeneration…or are suffering with chronic back pain…consider nonsurgical spinal decompression. You just might be a candidate!

Is Spinal Decompression Ongoing?

Spinal Decompression is now considered by many to be the “Gold Standard” for the nonsurgical treatment of herniated and bulging discs associated with chronic back pain and sciatica.

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

At our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center we have helped thousands of herniated disc patients return to more normal lives. About 70% of them decide to continue on with some sort of maintenance program to maintain the positive changes obtained with the normal treatment protocol.

WHY…is this necessary to maintain the changes…will the results undo themselves without ongoing spinal decompression sessions?

Well…this is a great question…and the simple answer is that these patients are so happy with the spinal decompression results that they don’t want to take any chances.

What we are talking about are decompression maintenance visits of anywhere from once per month to once every 3 months. Some patients just monitor their back or neck pain themselves and come in for a session or two when they think they need it.

Spinal decompression is a tool. It helps thousands of herniated discs patients return to more normal lives every month worldwide. There are also thousands of back and neck surgeries that are prevented each year because of nonsurgical spinal decompression on machines like the DRX9000.

If coming in for periodic spinal decompression sessions will allow these patients to maintain the positive changes achieved it’s a small price to pay.

So…is spinal decompression ongoing?

For some, YES!

The choice is YOURS 🙂

Low Back Pain: Where Is My Pain Coming From?

We have been helping patients with low back pain and sciatica in San Francisco for almost  20 years now, so we know first hand about the many causes of back pain and how to diagnose them.

back pain treatment in san francisco
Back Pain

Low back pain can emanate from many anatomical locations (as well as a combination of locations), which always makes it interesting when a patient asks, “…doc, where in my back is my pain coming from?”  In context of an office visit, we take an accurate history and perform our physical exam to try to reproduce symptoms to give us clues as to what tissue(s) may be the primary pain generators. In spite of our strong intent to be accurate, did you know, regardless of the doctor type, there is only about a 45% accuracy rate when making a low back pain diagnosis?  This is partially because there are many tissues that can be damaged or injured that are innervated by the same nerve fibers and hence, clinically they look very similar to each other. In order to improve this rather sad statistic, in 1995 the Quebec Task Force published research reporting that accuracy could be improved to over 90% if we utilize a classification approach where low back conditions are divided into 1 of 3 broad categories:

  1. Red flags – These include dangerous conditions such as cancer, infection, fracture, cauda equina syndrome (which is a severe neurological condition where bowel and bladder function is impaired). These conditions generally require emergency care due to the life threatening and/or surgical potential.
  2. Mechanical back pain – These diagnoses include facet syndromes, ligament and joint capsule sprains, muscle strains, degenerative joint disease (also called osteoarthritis), and spondylolisthesis.
  3. Nerve Root compression – These conditions include pinching of the nerve roots, most frequently from herniated disks. This category can include spinal stenosis (SS) or, combinations of both, but if severe enough where the spinal cord is compromised (more commonly in the neck), SS might then be placed in the 1st of the 3 categories described above.

The most common category is mechanical back pain of which “facet syndrome” is the most common condition. This is the classic patient who over did it (“The Weekend Warrior”) and can hardly get out of bed the next day. These conditions can include tearing or stretching of the capsule surrounding the facet joint due to performing too many bending, lifting, or twisting related activities. The back pain is usually localized to the area of injury but can radiate down into the buttocks or back of the thigh and can be mild to very severe. This can mimic sciatica pain from a herniated disc. A good spinal decompression doctor will be able to determine the source. An MRI may be necessary to confirm a herniated or bulging disc.

We realize you have a choice who you choose to provide your healthcare services.  If you, a friend or family member requires care for low back pain, we sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence shown by choosing our services and look forward in serving you and your family presently and, in the future.
