Spinal Decompression or Physical Therapy?

spinal decompression therapy in SF
Spinal Decompression or Physical Therapy in San Francisco?

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs is San Francisco for over 23 years.

Several times per month we will consult with a herniated disc patient that was told they needed physical therapy for their condition by their doctor. Sometimes this helped a little, but more often than not it made them worse.  WHY?

When a vertebral disc is out of it’s normal position and putting pressure on a nerve, nerve root or the spinal cord, it can cause severe inflammation and muscle spasm (guarding). This is the natural response of the body as it attempts to protect the injured area by limiting motion.

Physical therapy even done by an expert can often times aggravate the herniated disc complex as the body is unable to handle even gentle exercise in it’s inflamed state.

Spinal decompression on the other hand is very safe and gentle and by design seeks to restore the injured disc into a more normal alignment, reducing nerve pressure, muscle spasm and inflammation.

The spinal decompression machine has a built in bio-feedback mechanism that senses the response of the body to the treatment and makes adjustments to the force based on this feedback loop.  This protects the body and allows the process to begin even in the most difficult of cases.

Once the muscles guarding has subsided as well as the inflammation and pain levels, e will slowly increase the intensity and move through the treatment protocol until we achieve the desired outcome. This process usually takes about 6 weeks (20 1 hour sessions).

We incorporate electrical muscle stimulation, ice, deep tissue laser and gentle massage techniques along the way.

In the event that a patient requires physical therapy at the end of the treatment, they are now in a better physical condition to handle it.

We have one of the most advanced physical therapy teams in San Francisco at our primary clinic in San Francisco, Chiro-Medical Group, Inc.  So, in the event that PT is needed, our patients simply walk a few blocks to get treatment.

So, there you go. Be very careful when you are told that you need physical therapy for a herniated disc and you are in a lot of pain.  Consider spinal decompression first. You may not even need PT.

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Numbness in the Hand?

hand pain and numbness in SF
Hand Pain and Numbness Treatment in San Francisco

We have been providing treatment for hand  pain and numbness in San Francisco since 1992.

Hand pain and numbness is fairly common  with people that spend the majority of their day in front of a computer.  Unfortunately, many are misdiagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or wrist sprains when the actual problem  is in the neck.

That’s right, the primary cause of wrist pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in office workers is pressure on the nerves in the neck and not carpal tunnel syndrome.

The nerves that exit from in between the bones in the neck, travel down the arms and into the hands. Pressure on these nerves as they exit the spine from tight muscles, bulging discs, herniated discs, misaligned vertebrae, facet syndrome,  or disc and spine degeneration is much more likely than CTS (which is rare).

This is good new because it is much more easier to treat most of the above than it is true CTS.

Traditional chiropractic care is very effective for neck, arm and hand pain.  Massage, stretching and exercise, and even deep tissue laser can also help accelerate healing.

In the event chiropractic care fails to deliver a favorable outcome, we have cervical decompression with the DRX9000c spinal decompression system.

Herniated and bulging discs can be difficult to treat in some cases and the DRX9000c is very safe, gentle and effective.

Often times a combination of chiropractic and spinal decompression makes the most sense.

So…if you have been suffering with numbness in the hands or pain in the hands, weakness, tingling or neck pain, we would like to meet with you to discuss your treatment options.

To find out if you are a candidate for treatment at our San Francisco Chiropractic and Spinal Decompression Clinic please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

How Do You Know If You Have a Herniated Disc?

herniated disc treatment
Ask For A Free Spinal Decompression Consultation

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco since 1992.

Herniated discs in the low back are fairly common. They are less common in the neck.  Usually there is low back pain or sciatica…but you can also have a herniated or bulging disc and not even know it.

That’s right…many will live and die with herniated discs and they never have any symptoms.  In fact, some herniated discs in the neck or back will heal on their own.

Most of the time it is low back or neck pain, sciatica,  arm pain, numbness or tingling or weakness that causes a herniated disc patient to seek treatment.  There are other causes of these symptoms so it’s not always a cervical or lumbar disc herniation.

Some of the other musculoskeletal conditions that can cause these symptoms are neck or back sprain/strain, subluxation, misalignment, pinched nerve, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, stenosis, and more.

A disc herniation is not the end of the world either. In fact, most of the time a cervical or lumbar disc bulge or herniation will respond favorably to convention chiropractic or physical therapy. In the event some extra help is needed, many chiropractors offer nonsurgical spinal decompression. The machine we use is the DRX9000.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat disc herniations naturally without drugs or surgery. Sometimes the combination of chiropractic and the DRX9000 is just what’s needed.

As far as confirming the presence of a disc herniation…the MRI is the gold standard. Typically, we order an MRI to quantify the problem and help dictate the treatment plan. Sometimes there are multiple levels of involvement which requires more treatment. Sometimes the severity is minimal which takes less time. All cases are different.

In addition, not everyone can qualify medically for spinal decompression treatment. Because of this we offer a complimentary consultation which we can do in person or by phone to see if you are a good candidate for care.

To find out if you are a candidate for care at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center please call 415-392-2225.  Make sure to ask for the complimentary consultation.

Low Back Pain Relief in San Francisco

back pain treatment in san francisco
Low Back Pain

We have been providing treatment for Low Back Pain and Sciatica in Downtown San Francisco for over 22 years now.

Over 80% of the population will experience low back pain at some point in their life. Many will go on to develop chronic low back pain, which is low back pain that persists for over 90 days.

Sciatica, which is pain down the leg or both legs, is also fairly common and can result from the same underlying cause of the low back pain. Some patients have sciatica only or low back pain only or both.

Here is a list of the most common causes of low back pain:

  1. Low back sprain or strain.
  2. Vertebral Subluxation (misalignment).
  3. Herniated or Bulging Lumbar Disc.
  4. Spinal Stenosis.
  5. Degenerative Disc Disease.
  6. Facet Syndrome.

The best course of treatment depends on the nature and severity of the underlying problem, your age, your overall health, and if there are any complications such as a short leg, Scoliosis, foot pronation, spinal fusion, etc.

Chiropractic adjustments are your best first choice when it comes to low back pain relief or sciatica relief. Sometimes you will see results after the first visit. Sometimes it takes or longer.

In the event you have a herniated or bulging disc that does not respond to chiropractic adjustments, nonsurgical spinal decompression is a logical next step.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat herniated and bulging discs naturally and painlessly. The machine we use is the DRX9000.

Often times a combination of chiropractic and spinal decompression works best. We also incorporate spinal rehabilitation, nutrition, and lifestyle modifications into our programs.

So…if you are looking for low back pain relief in San Francisco and would like to learn more about our program, please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression treatment in San Francisco for over 11 years now in the Financial District.

Recently, we were acquired by Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. of San Francisco (CMG). The clinic has been re-named from Executive Express Chiropractic to Chiro-Medical Express (CMGE).

This now gives us the ability to offer a wider range of services to our spinal decompression patients than we could before.  CME is only a few blocks away from CMGE, which is located at the landmark Embarcadero Center (validated parking).

CME has one of the largest and most technologically advanced physical therapy depts. in San Francisco and also has world class medical doctors that specialize in Physical Medicine.

So, what this means is that our san Francisco spinal decompression patients now have access to CME and all it has to offer. We are now able to treat very advanced cases of lumbar and cervical disc herniations and bulges that require extensive post decompression rehabilitation.

Sure, most of our herniated disc patients will not need this…but some will, and we can now take care of them in house. This makes for a much more cohesive treatment and the outcomes so far have been outstanding.

Some of the condition we are able to treat with our DRX9000 spinal decompression system are as follows:

  • Lumbar and cervical disc herniations and bulges
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Facet Syndrome

If you have been diagnosed with any of these conditions and are interested in finding out more about our San Francisco Spinal Decompression program. please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Treatment for a Bulging Lumbar Disc in San Francisco

herniated disc treatment in San Francisco
Pinched Lumbar Nerve Causing Sciatica

We have been providing treatment for herniated and bulging lumbar discs in San Francisco for over 23 years.

The spinal discs, which are the ligamentous pads in between the bones have tow primary components:

1. The Nucleus Pulposus, which is the gelatinous center part of the disc that helps give the spine it’s flexibility.

2. The Annulus Fibrosis, which are the strong fibrous circular rings that help contain the nucleus and attach the disc to the vertebrae.

The spinal discs are very strong and can handle tremendous amounts of stress. However, like anything, there are limits. When the annular fibers weaken and give way to the nucleus, which then puts pressure on the delicate spinal cord or nerve roots, we call this a disc bulge or herniation. There are various names for the particular type of bulge or herniation depending on the nature and severity of the problem.

The spinal discs are living tissue so they are also subject to the overall health and integrity of the internal environment, which is for the most part a reflection of the patients lifestyle.

So, for various reasons, many that are unknown (trauma, lifestyle and cumulative physical stress), and some that are unknown, the spinal discs breakdown and bulge or herniate. Typically, the disc will bulge before it herniates in degenerative conditions that develop over time.

Of special note is the fact that much of the population has a bulging or herniated disc and has no symptoms. That’s right…it’s possible to have this and not even know it. Not all cervical or lumbar disc bulges or herniations cause pain and/or dysfunction.

Over the past 23 years, we have helped tens of thousands of patients with herniated and bulging lumbar spinal discs. Our results have been outstanding.

We use a combination of chiropractic, spinal decompression, and physical therapy. We also have medical doctors if needed to help co-manage difficult cases.

A herniated or bulging disc in the lumbar spine can cause low back pain, sciatica or leg pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and even night pain. There is usually associated muscle spasm, swelling, and loss of motion.

If you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc (usually by MRI) or suspect you may have one, we would like to meet with you.

To find out if you are a candidate for bulging disc treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Mention this article for a complimentary consultation.

What Does Spinal Decompression Costs?

We have been providing treatment for bulging and herniated discs in San Francisco for 23 years now.

About 10 years ago, after considerable research, we decided to add nonsurgical spinal decompression to our clinic so that we could better treat these conditions. The results have been outstanding.   The machine we use is the DRX9000. The protocol for spinal decompression is 20 one hour sessions over 6-8 weeks. We were the first to offer spinal decompression with the DRX9000 in San Francisco and our cost at that time was $6000-$10,000 depending on the severity of the condition,  level of treatment and adjunctive therapies involved.

DRX9000 Lumbar Decompresion

That was then and this is now. Now there are many more spinal decompression machines and the machines costs less…so the price has come down. Our prices these days for lumbar or cervical spinal disc decompression is $3500-$6000 depending on what you need. Quite a bit cheaper. Plus, we are much better at it…it’s an art. Over the past 10 years we have performed tens of thousands of spinal decompression sessions on thousands of patients. We are pretty good at this…and experience matters! Some of the conditions we treat are lumbar and cervical disc herniations, disc bulges, spinal stenosis, disc degeneration, and facet syndrome. The most common symptoms associated with these conditions are low back pain, sciatica, leg pain, numbness, tingling, burning, aching, neck pain, arm pain, weakness, night pain. There has never been a better time to consider spinal decompression therapy. We reserve the machine for your appointments so there is no waiting, and we validate your parking at the Embarcadero Center. It’s super easy and efficient.

Do Spinal Decompression Results Last?

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for over 22 years now.

About 10 years ago we began to incorporate spinal decompression therapy into our herniated disc treatment protocols. The machine we use is the DRX9000.

The DRX9000 is designed and built to treat herniated and bulging lumbar discs naturally. We also have a DRX9000c cervical decompression system. This enables us to treat herniated discs in the neck.

Over the past 10 years we have treated thousands of patients with spinal decompression. Many were scheduled for back or neck  surgery. We are proud to say that the results during this time have been outstanding. Most of the time we are able to achieve favorable outcomes and about half of our decompression patients continue on with some sort of maintenance program.

So…Do spinal decompression results last?

For the most part YES! As long as you do not return back do the unhealthy lifestyle habits that caused the condition to develop in the first place. Most herniated discs develop over time. Some are traumatic or due to sports or auto injuries, but the majority are because of things like poor posture or ergonomics, obesity, stress, bad shoes, poor sleeping habits, etc. Things you have control over.

Once the spine becomes damaged and misaligned it starts to cause abnormal wear and tear on the spinal disc, which can then lead to disc bulging and herniation.

The DRX9000 re-positions the disc, enlarges the disc space, re-hydrates the disc, strengthens the spinal ligaments and muscles, and elongates the spine. Typically the results are permanent, but many that lead active lifestyles wish to be proactive and have a decompression session here and there to help ensure things stay where they are. This is optional and totally up to the patient. Maintenance care visit frequencies range between 4-12 sessions per year.

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Hand Pain and Herniated Disc in The Neck

herniated disc treatment san francisco
Is it Really CTS?

We have been providing treatment for hand pain in San Francisco for over 22 years now.

Hand pain is very common in people that spend the majority of their day sitting at a desk in front of a computer…like most of our patients.

When it comes to hand pain treatment the source of the pain is not always in the hand. In fact, more often than not the source of the arm or hand pain is from pinched nerves in the neck. That’s right, pinched nerves in the neck can cause the same type of hand pain that pinched nerves in the hand or wrist can cause (carpal tunnel syndrome).

This is why it’s so important for a doctor to examine the neck to the finger tips when a patient presents with carpal tunnel symptoms such as hand pain.

The primary cause of pinched nerves in the neck is a herniated or bulging cervical disc.

Chiropractors have great success treating pinched nerves in the neck with adjustments, massage, exercise and other non-invasive treatments such as deep tissue laser and Active Release Techniques (ART).

In the unlikely event that chiropractic fails to deliver desired results for hand pain due to a herniated disc, then nonsurgical cervical decompression is considered for the neck.

At our clinic we will often incorporate cervical decompression with the DRX9000c and chiropractic adjustments. This can work extremely well.

We also have a medical team and physical therapy team for difficult cases.

So, if you are suffering with neck, arm, shoulder, elbow, or hand pain, you should probably visit a chiropractor that has expertise in CTS treatment and repetitive stress injuries. And if they have a cervical spinal decompression machine that’s even better.

To find out if you are a candidate for hand pain treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression or Back Surgery for a Herniated Disc?

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco for over 10 years now.

Many herniated disc patients are told they need back surgery. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t. How do they know for sure?

Well, welcome to the life of a spinal decompression doctor. This is what we are dealing with every day. I would like to give you my take on the situation.

In my opinion, a herniated disc patient should NOT rush to have back surgery. Because once they do, in many cases, the will be permanently disqualified from ever trying nonsurgical spinal decompression.

In addition, many herniated discs will repair naturally in time. In fact, they say that more people than not are actually walking around with bulging and herniated discs and do not even know they have them…and never will. Not all patients with a herniated disc in the low back experience low back pain or sciatica.

That’s right, the majority of lumbar disc herniations do not even cause symptoms.

But in certain cases, the disc is herniated in such a way that the body is unable to re-position it naturally or heal it such that it does not interfere with a person’s life. In situations like this conservative chiropractic care can be very effective.

There is however a subset of all herniated and bulging disc patients that do not respond to chiropractic, drugs, cortisone, physical therapy or anything for that matter. Some of these patients are suffering daily with sever low back pain and sciatica. many are unable to sleep and end up taking various kinds of medications day in and day out. Life is miserable.

These are the type of back pain patients that have a tendency to want to have surgery…they will try anything. In my clinical experience this type of patient represents about 10-15% of all herniated disc patients and is still a lot of people.

These are the perfect candidates for spinal decompression. The machine we use is the DRX9000 but there are many fine decompression systems out there.

Unless it is a medical emergency (rare) or you are disqualified from decompression therapy (rare), I recommend a course of spinal decompression to see if a patient will respond. Disc decompression is very safe and gentle. It takes about 6 weeks (20 sessions) to work through the protocol and make a determination if the treatment was successful.

If the DRX9000 does not achieve a favorable outcome and desired result you are still whole and able to pursue all other treatment options including back surgery.

If you have a spinal fusion you can never try decompression. So, why not try decompression first?

So there you go…that’s my 2 cents for what it’s worth. I have helped hundreds of herniated disc patients avoid surgery…the next one could be YOU!

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.
