What does spinal decompression do?

Nonsurgical spinal decompression is often times misunderstood…even by medical doctors and spine experts. Some say it’s just fancy traction. Others say it’s a complete waste of money.

Well…all I can say is “everyone is entitled to their own opinion”.  But if you are going to give patients or friends advice about a chronic back pain treatment that could potentially change their lives forever…you better know what you are talking about.

So what exactly does spinal decompression do anyway and what makes so many herniated disc patients want to do it?

I like to refer to spinal decompression as a respirator for the spinal disc.  A respirator for the lungs helps the lungs to breath when they are unable to do so on their own…until they can. Spinal decompression machines like the DRX9000 help the lumbar spinal discs (DRX9000c for cervical discs) to do what they would if they could.

So what is a spinal disc supposed to do?

A spinal disc has two primary functions:

1. The spinal disc acts as a ligament to hold the vertebrae above and below together and create separation of the bones so the spinal nerves can pass through to all all the muscles, glands, and organs. Spinal nerves are branches off the spinal cord.

2. The spinal disc also acts as a shock absorber (like the shocks on your car) to prevent wear and tear on the joints and body parts. The discs give the spine flexibility.

When external physical, mental, or chemical stresses overcome internal resistance it can cause the bones of the spine and the spinal discs to lose their normal position. When this happens the discs wear abnormally (like the tires on your car when the front end is out of alignment). This can offend and irritate the nerves they are designed to protect when they are in alignment, which can lead to disc bulges, disc herniations, degenerative disc disease, pinched nerves, back or neck pain and sciatica.

The problem here is physical. The spine and spinal discs are not where they are supposed to be. To take a medication for this which is chemical, will only address the symptom. Hey…sometimes the back or neck pain is so bad you need a drug…but just understand…the problem is still there.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to isolate on a specific herniated spinal disc segment…say L5-S1 (the most common disc to herniate) and reverse the process that led to the herniation. Disc decompression separates the spinal bones and enlarges the disc space taking pressure off the nerves (which cause the pain).

Decompression therapy elongates the spine making it more flexible. Machines like the DRX9000 or DRX9000c help restore fluid exchange between the injured disc and the bloodstream by introducing a pumping action on the disc. This helps to get rid of toxins, inflammation, and waste products and bring in freshly oxygenated blood. This enlarges the disc and slows down the degenerative process.

Spinal decompression therapy strengthens the spinal ligaments, repositions the disc, and sucks herniated disc fragments back to the center of the disc and away from the spinal nerves….thereby reducing pain, inflammation, and spasms.

Like I said earlier…spinal decompression therapy is a respirator for the spinal discs.

Depending on how many disc herniations you have, your age, level of spinal degeneration, and any complications, the treatment process could be anywhere from 15-30 visits. But you have to qualify medically…not everyone does.

So what’s the next step if you want to try spinal decompression?

The next step is to find a spinal decompression doctor and see if you are a good candidate.

When to consider Spinal Decompression

We consult with hundreds of herniated disc patients every year at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center. Many choose to move forward with spinal decompression…many decide to wait…or to try something covered by their insurance. That’s right, nonsurgical spinal decompression is not covered by insurance.

If you have insurance, we can most likely use it to cover re-exams, exercises, ice, heat, muscle stimulation, and some other ancillary charges…but the decompression therapy itself is still considered experimental.

Spinal decompression on the DRX9000 costs about $5000 at our decompression clinic in San Francisco…about the same as a vacation for two to Hawaii.

So you don’t have to be rich. What you do need to have is the desire to get better. And you need to make fixing your back a priority. You need to schedule the rest of your life around the spinal decompression treatment, which usually lasts about 6-8 weeks. One hour sessions 2-4 times per week, with lots of home care and exercises.

Desire to get better in my opinion is the #1 factor (you must also qualify medically). As long as that is there we can work with you on the finances (payment plans, zero interest financing).

Spinal decompression is not a magic bullet. In fact, it’s quite a bit of work. But if you want your life back it’s a small price to pay. And chances are…if you are accepted into our spinal decompression program (we don’t accept everyone) you will achieve a favorable outcome.

If you have been diagnosed with a bulging or herniated disc, or spinal disc degeneration, or spinal stenosis, or facet syndrome…you may be a candidate for the DRX9000.

If you have tried other conventional back pain treatments that have failed to deliver results, such as medical care, physical therapy, acupuncture, or chiropractic…you should consider spinal decompression.

Even if you have not tried anything yet…but have been diagnosed with a herniated disc, or any of the conditions above…you can try decompression first.

What you can’t do is try surgical fusion first. If you have any hardware in your spine you are disqualified from spinal decompression. It may be wise to try decompression first…you can always have surgery.

So, whether you have been living with chronic back pain and have tried every treatment under the sun, or have recently been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc and want to go right after the best “nonsurgical” herniated disc treatment…spinal decompression just might make sense for you…sooner than later!

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression with the DRX9000 at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center…call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.

San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center News

We have been helping chronic back and neck pain patients in downtown San Francisco for almost 20 years now. About 6 years ago we decided to incorporate non-surgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 into our treatment protocols…and the results have been outstanding.

Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

Recently, our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center performed it’s 10,000th spinal disc decompression treatment on the DRX9000.  Here is an excerpt from our recent  SF Spinal Decompression press release announcing this milestone:

Dr. Eben Davis, founder of Executive Express Chiropractic and Spinal Decompression in downtown San Francisco recently performed spinal decompression treatment number 10,000.

Non-surgical spinal decompression is performed on a computerized machine that is designed and built to treat conditions such as herniated and bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and facet syndrome. The machines that are used at San Francisco Spinal Decompression are the DRX9000 lumbar decompression system, and the DRX9000c cervical decompression system.

Many chronic back and neck pain sufferers feel they have nowhere to turn when they are diagnosed with a herniated or bulging spinal disc. Some disc patients are told they need back surgery, or they just need to learn to live in pain. A herniated disc in the lumbar spine can lead to sciatica, or pain down the leg, weakness, and severe back pain and disability.

Herniated discs in the neck can cause pain down the arm, weakness of grip, night pain, and severe headaches.

So, we are excited and our disc herniation treatment with the DRX9000 and DRX9000c is thriving. You learn a lot treating this many back and neck pain patients with spinal decompression…it’s an art.

If you live or work near the  San Francisco Financial District, and are suffering with low back or neck pain that will not go away…or have been diagnosed with a herniated disc in the cervical or lumbar spine…you may be a candidate for spinal disc decompression therapy.

Some of the conditions that non-surgical spinal decompression treats are:

  • Cervical and Lumbar Disc Herniations
  • Cervical and Lumbar Disc Bulges
  • Cervical and Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
  • Cervical or Lumbar Facet Syndrome
  • Degenerative Disc Disease

To schedule an appointment at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center…call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post to receive a complimentary consultation. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

Is Spinal Decompression a Permanent Fix?

We have been providing spinal disc decompression in downtown San Francisco for about six years now. In fact, we were the first to offer decompression therapy with the DRX9000 to the SF Financial District.

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

One of the most common questions herniated disc patients have about spinal decompression therapy is this:

Will spinal decompression fix my herniated disc or do I have to keep getting treatments?

It’s a good question…but the answer is not so simple. In reality…it just depends. It depends on the age of the patient, the over-all condition of the spine, how many disc herniations there are…and whether or not there are any complications such as obesity, scoliosis, or a short leg.

And you know what…sometimes we just don’t know until you finish the DRX9000 treatment protocol and we see how you hold up. Many patients decide at the end of the initial phase of treatment that they want to do spinal decompression on an ongoing basis because they love the way it makes them feel. Some take a wait and see approach…and everything in between.

Not much of an answer I know…but it’s the truth.

Heck…our San Francisco Spinal Decompression patients are usually elated with the way they feel and they want to make sure it stays that way. Core exercises, stretching, chiropractic, and an over-all fitness program will also help maintain the changes made with decompression therapy.

I have had disc decompression patients not follow through with any maintenance care, and do fine. But in general…the herniated disc patients that do some sort of ongoing decompression therapy seem to do the best…which is why we recommend something.

Bottom Line: Spinal decompression is a permanent solution if you stick with some sort of regular spinal health regimen that may or may not include ongoing disc decompression treatments.  But if you can figure some ongoing spinal decompression sessions into your budget…it’s sure to be a good investment 🙂

Spinal Decompression Treatment for Lumbar Disc Herniations

San Francisco Spinal Decompression Doctor Comments:

Lumbar disc herniations often times cause severe pain and dysfunction which can lead to cortisone injections and surgery. In fact…it is not uncommon for surgery to be the first choice a herniated disc patient makes…not knowing they have other options that are less invasive.

DRX9000 Lumbar Decompresion

Options like non-surgical spinal decompression treatment with the DRX9000.

The DRX9000 is a computerized spinal disc decompression system that is designed and built to treat lumbar disc herniations without drugs or surgery.

The DRX9000 in my opinion is the Rolls Royce of spinal decompression machines. It is so comfortable that most herniated disc patients fall asleep during treatment. Patients often tell decompression doctors it’s the only good sleep they get every day.

Herniated discs, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, and facet syndrome can all be successfully treated with the DRX9000.

Low back pain and sciatica are the most common symptoms associated with herniated lumbar discs. Back pain relief from herniated disc symptoms can happen during the first decompression session. The complete spinal decompression therapy treatment can take up to 6-8 weeks  depending on the severity of the condition and how many spinal levels are involved.

Non-surgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 strengthens the spinal ligaments, elongates the spine, enlarges the disc space, re-positions and re-hydrates the injured disc, and reduces inflammation and pain. And it is highly targeted…unlike conventional traction.

Many decompression specialists will incorporate other modalities such as deep tissue laser, massage, core exercises, and chiropractic into chronic back pain treatment regimens. Some may include physical medicine or acupuncture as well.

The first step is to find a DRX9000 in your area.  And remember…just like everything else…and especially with disc decompression…you get what you pay for.

To schedule a complimentary DRX9000 decompression consultation at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center…call 415-392-2225 and mention this blog post.

Is Spinal Disc Decompression Safe?

We have been providing disc decompression therapy in downtown San Francisco for 6 years now. It is not uncommon for herniated disc patients who are considering non-surgical spinal decompression as a treatment option to be concerned about safety. After-all, many have been told they need back surgery and if they don’t have it they could end up in worse shape than they already are.

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

Often times their orthopedic doctor or medical doctor tells them that spinal decompression could harm them and the last thing they want is for a traction machine to be pulling on the injured spinal disc.

I would agree with this if spinal disc decompression were a traction machine. But it’s not.

Conventional spinal traction tables pull on the entire spine and can actually hurt a herniated disc patient. Spinal decompression systems such as the DRX9000 are computerized and have a built in bio-feedback mechanism that senses and monitors the patients muscle guarding response.

When muscle guarding increases, the spinal decompression machine decreases it’s pull. When muscle guarding decreases, the spinal decompression machine increases it’s pull, up to the predetermined target. All the while…a constant tension is maintained.

It does this while isolating on a specific spinal segment (unlike regular traction), such as L5-S1, which is the most common lumbar disc to bulge or herniate.

Your spinal decompression doctor and staff will closely monitor the decompression process by keeping an eye on the graphs on the machine that tell them how your body is responding to the treatment. All patients have a “kill button” in their hand during treatment and can stop the decompression instantly if something does not feel right.

Spinal decompression patients mostly fall asleep on the decompression machine…it’s that comfortable. After disc decompression the muscles are electronically stimulated to teach them to work with the spinal bones in their new position. Then ice is applied to reduce inflammation and soreness.

We have performed thousands of spinal disc decompression treatments at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center. Never has a patient suffered permanent bodily injury. Sure, some patients got sore…and a small percentage real sore…but that’s about it.

When you compare the safety record of spinal disc decompression to back surgery or cortisone injections or pain pills…heck, it’s not even close.

So YES!…spinal decompression therapy is safe…and it’s gentle. Will it fix your herniated disc? Maybe…maybe not. But even if the decompression process does not help your herniated disc…which is rare…you will still be whole and can try other treatments.

When we have a chronic back pain patient or chronic neck pain patient, that is concerned about the safety of  spinal decompression, we let them watch others do it…we let them do it and feel it themselves…and we let them talk to others that have done it. We make sure they are comfortable before we start.

So that’s it. Non-surgical spinal decompression might be just the treatment you need for your herniated disc. And please don’t let uninformed people talk you out of something that could possibly give you your life back. You be the judge.
